Portillo’s made its debut in the state of Michigan on Tuesday, March 16, 2021, with the grand opening of the fast casual’s new restaurant in Sterling Heights, MI. Fans braced themselves for the cold weather with parkas, gloves and hats to get in line early in the morning and be among the first in the area to enjoy Portillo’s unrivaled Chicago-style fare.
Local COVID-19 mandates opened indoor dining at limited capacity and allowed for guests to frequent the Motor City-themed dining room, clad in décor that highlights the history of the local area—Ford Model T’s and bumpers lined the walls next to guitars and framed photos of world-famous Motown artists like Aretha Franklin.
Diners were also able to utilize the restaurant’s well-oiled drive-thru and curbside pickup services to enjoy their Italian beefs, Chicago-style hot dogs and Chocolate Cake Shakes in their cars or at home.
Prior to the grand opening, fans were invited for a free meal at Portillo’s on Monday, March 8, 2021 and Tuesday, March 9, 2021. The restaurant asked attendees to consider donating to the Sterling Heights Area Community Foundation, with Portillo’s matching the donation amount. Through the collective generosity of local fans, the event was able to raise $12,183 for the Sterling Heights charity partner.
