Portillo’s is a growing brand, and it’s important to us that our team members grow with us. That means we arm them with the skills and knowledge to foster their growth and have practices in place to help them develop in their careers. Please take a moment to read about Monika's growth and what she’s learned along the way as she progressed from an Expediter to an NRO General Manager at Portillo’s!
How long have you been with Portillo’s and what made you come work for us?
I have been a part of the Portillo’s family for over 11 years. I first started working at Portillo’s the summer before senior year of high school. At the time I was looking for a part-time job for the summer. Here we are 11 summers later!
What do you love about Portillo’s?
The people and the opportunities. There are no other people like the ones who work for Portillo’s and the opportunities are available for anyone who is passionate and willing to put in the work.
What was your first position here and what position did you get promoted to?
I started off as an expediter! The position quickly got me out of my bubble. I recently was promoted to NRO General Manager and opened my first NRO as a GM in Kissimmee, FL.
What do you love about your position?
I love the team I work with and the opportunities I have to spread the love of Portillo’s across the country. I love that my position allows me to be involved in projects that play on my strengths and being a part of the evolution of our processes during NROs. The excitement of opening up a new restaurant is like no other.
What advice would you give to someone at Portillo’s looking to move up?
“If you aim at nothing, you will hit nothing.” Our company is full of resources when it comes to our development. It is important to invest the time in building an IDP and finding the right mentor(s). Know where you are and where you want to go. Be honest with yourself, take and apply the feedback and never stop working on your goals.
Where do see yourself growing in this company?
My first NRO was as a team member when I was just 18 years old. It is hard to picture myself not being involved in NROs in one way or another. My long-term goal is to be Director of the NRO.
